Your living room is the common social space in your home. It’s the informal area for relaxing and entertaining. So choose a color palette that you love and enjoy being in every day.
If you’re not sure what colors to choose, the first place to start is to gather ideas: places you visit, other people’s homes, hotels, home shows, magazines, or online resources such as Pinterest or Houzz are all great resources. You could also look to fabrics and textures, such as a large rug or piece of upholstery, or even your closet wardrobe, to inspire your design and color scheme.
Balancing Architectural Features
When you are considering color schemes for a living room, pay special attention to the living room’s architectural features and the floor plan. For instance, an open floor plan typically looks best and creates a sense of flow with a consistent color palette across the entire space. Large windows, vaulted ceilings, beams, and fireplaces also offer input to the selection of a color scheme, as they contribute to the overall feel of a room.
Certain architectural features represent the trends of a specific time, like a sunken living room, split levels, or a stairway banister. These elements offer the opportunity to restore their original appeal using color schemes inspired by that time or to modernize them using colors that bring the past to the present.
Color Ratios: The Secret to a Well-Designed Space
We recommend that no matter what color scheme you choose, you keep it to three main colors. This keeps the living room from being too busy and creates a sense of flow. As we’ve mentioned when choosing colors for furniture, let the color wheel help you select complementary or analogous colors.
Then, to pull it off, follow the 60:30:10 rule. Use your dominant color for 60% of the room, including large items such as floors, walls, sofas, or window treatments. The secondary color should be 30% of the room, perhaps a large surface or two, plus smaller items. The third color is for accenting with pieces such as a chair, wall decor, throw pillow or blanket.
